New approaches. After 26 years publishing printed books, Bungalo made the switch to ebooks in 2012 — more specifically multi-touch ebooks for Apple’s iPad and other devices. We thought it was the ideal medium for both illustrated non-fiction titles for adults and children’s picture books but interactive picture books have been slow to catch on. So Bungalo will be experimenting with downloadable PDFs of some of its bestselling titles and creating some audio stories.
Anniversary. April 2021 will mark the fourth anniversary of the passing of Bungalo Book co-founder, illustrator and author John Bianchi. He was a talented artist, a valuable friend and a truly funny man. Luckily, he left a legacy of dozens of warm, entertaining picture books for kids that are still available through Bungalo Books, Pokeweed Press and The American Reading Company.

The next book project. Bungalo Books was about to start work on Beyond Juno Beach: A Young Canadian Soldier’s Dangerous Drive Across Europe (1944-1945) when Covid-19 disrupted the publishing business and the world. The book is still in the works but the timing is uncertain. Author Frank Edwards still needs time (and money, gulp) to wrap up his research so he can get it written later this year.
Happy New Year, we hope. Last year’s Covid-19 school shutdown meant that Frank did not make any author visits to schools and libraries in 2020. Tentative bookings for 2021 can be made although of course nothing is guaranteed until school boards finish their restructuring. With luck, Frank will be back on the road in September, ready to share his new book, Beyond Juno Beach, as well as his tried-and-true Reading for the Fun of It presentations.
A return to normal turned into abnormal. Frank returned from his two-year adventure in Vietnam in summer of 2018 where he wrote magazine stories for a Saigon magazine, took thousands of photographs (for a book project) and travelled through Southeast Asia. The search for publishing partners was upended in 2020 thanks to Covid.

With the 2018 release of Popchuck’s End, Paul Toffanello’s Popchuck trilogy is complete. Paul is touring schools and libraries through Ontario, BC, California and Arizona with the books. And ebook versions of all three titles (Ghost, Revenge and End) will be coming to Apple and Amazon as ebooks.
